Peanut Butter Insights: Employee Eligibility Criteria to Avoid

Working with nearly a thousand clients nationwide, we’ve grown as experts in eligibility criteria employers most commonly use when offering Student Loan Assistance to employees. On the flip side, we’ve also observed eligibility criteria employers should avoid.

We recommend against the following restrictive eligibility criteria:

  • Salary (e.g., above or below a threshold, or benefit contributions tiers based on this)
  • Degree requirements (i.e., must have attained a specific type of degree, or degree in a certain field)

These requirements can cause unnecessary uncertainty and confusion among employees. It’s important to offer a benefit that accommodates the greater good, impacting as many employees as possible to drive home on key HR metrics like attracting and retaining talent.
